Welcome to the Austin Byzantine Community
Christ is Among Us!
If you visit our community, you’re likely to hear these words: “Christ is Among Us!” and of course, you’ll hear the response as well: “He is and shall be!” This little exchange is more than just a pious greeting or quaint tradition. It is a profound and joyful expression of our faith, echoing the proclamation we make during the Feast of the Resurrection: “Christ is Risen!” During those thrilling days following the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, his disciples were often surprised to meet him when they met for prayer and the breaking of bread. Even after the Lord’s Ascension into heaven, they remembered his solemn promise to them: “Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Over the centuries, the disciples of Jesus continued to gather for worship and the breaking of bread, in the expectant hope of seeing the Lord. They knew that the Lord would keep his promise and so, as often as they gathered, they joyfully proclaimed to one another: “Christ is Among Us!”
Here at the Byzantine Community of Austin, we know it to be true: Christ is among us! When we gather for worship, the Lord reveals himself to us in many ways, but most intimately in the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. The Eucharist is the ancient breaking of the bread – the intimate meal we are privileged to share with God. We recognize Christ in the Bread and Cup of the Eucharist because we have also been granted to recognize him in one another.
On behalf of our Byzantine Catholic Community of Austin, I would like to invite you to join us for worship. If you are a Byzantine, Melkite, Romanian or Ukrainian Catholic living in the Austin area, please consider joining us; we share the same common tradition and we will strive to make you feel right at home. And if you’re not familiar with the Byzantine tradition, we would be honored to have you join our open and welcoming community for worship. Even though our Byzantine Christian faith is ancient, you will find that we are not the bearers of a dead and antiquated tradition. This ancient faith gives us our life, vibrancy and joy, bringing us into a relationship with the living Lord who makes all things new … today! As you browse these pages, perhaps you will be able to say, “They must be right! Christ really is among them.” But don’t just take our word for it … come and see for yourself!
